Need an FEI Passport for your APSL Lusitano?
How to Obtain an FEI Passport Through USEF
If you're planning to compete your Lusitano in Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) competitions, whether in dressage, working equitation, driving, or other international disciplines, your horse will need an FEI Passport or FEI Recognition Card. In the United States, these documents are issued through the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF).
Here’s what you need to know to get your horse competition-ready on the international stage.
What is an FEI Passport?
An FEI Passport is an official document that serves as the horse’s international identification. It contains the horse’s details, vaccination records, ownership information, and confirmation of registration with the FEI.
For horses already registered with USEF and competing domestically, this passport is required when stepping up to FEI-sanctioned international events, such as CDI dressage competitions or international Working Equitation events governed under FEI rules.
When Do You Need an FEI Passport?
-
You must obtain an FEI Passport (or Recognition Card) before entering any FEI competition.
-
The horse must be microchipped with a chip that meets FEI standards.
-
The horse must be registered with both USEF and the FEI.
Two Options: Passport or Recognition Card
-
FEI Passport: Required for horses with foreign ownership or those first registered with a foreign federation.
-
FEI Recognition Card: An alternative to the passport for horses that are US-owned and US-bred, which accompanies the USEF National Passport booklet. This option is often simpler and sufficient for US-based horses competing in FEI events within North America.
Step-by-Step Guide to Obtain an FEI Passport or Recognition Card
1. Register Your Horse with USEF
-
Go to https://www.usef.org and create or log into your member account.
-
Under your profile, register your horse with USEF if it isn’t already.
2. Register Your Horse with FEI
-
Through your USEF account, complete the FEI registration for your horse. This must be renewed annually.
-
A horse must also have an FEI registration number before a passport or recognition card can be issued.

Visit the USEF FEI Passports page to download the appropriate form.
-
Complete the FEI Passport or Recognition Card application and send it with:

-
Your horse’s microchip number.
-
A payment for the applicable fees (see USEF website for current pricing).

4. Wait for Processing
-
Normal processing takes 2–3 weeks, but expedited processing is available for an additional fee.
