Scheduling Inspection for Breeding
Why Inspection?
To be registered as a Lusitano, the APSL Stud Book requires that every young horse that is to be registered as a Lusitano must have two parents that have been inspected and approved for breeding by APSL. This process of inspecting adult horses and adding those approved for breeding to the Adult Stud Book is referred to as "Revision." This is the same process used for all of the main European breeds. Through the process of revision, APSL works to maintain and increase the quality in the Lusitano breed.
How Does USLA Schedule Inspections?
USLA Schedules inspection for breeding based on the applications that we receive. Inspections are expensive: If we don't receive a sufficient number of applications for inspections, we may need to skip a year. USLA must work with APSL to arranged to bring a judge from Portugal to hold the inspection.
It's also important to understand that the United States and Canada cover a huge area, and that it is not realistic to be able to bring all of the horses together for one or two events to inspect all of the horses at one time, as is sometimes done in other countires.
Here's how we do it:- Through the USLA website, We collect applications and basic payment for inspection on the USLA Websites on an ongoing basis. The sooner we know there will be horses in a particular area, the more likely we are to be able to schedule an inspection in the region.
- Only paid applications are considered when the schedule is created.
- In the spring and early summer each year, if we have a sufficient number of inspection requests, we request a judge from APSL for the fall.
- In July, we begin looking at the inspection requests, and if we have enough of them, we begin organizing the schedule for some time in the fall.
- For a small number of horses, we try to bring the horses together to a single location where this is possible.
- For a larger number of horses, we are usually able to bring the judge to the site where the horses are located. This is particularly helpful for mares as they frequently have foals with them.
- Once the schedule is created, we determine the cost of the travel and bill travel fees to the individuals that will be having horses inspected.
When are Inspections scheduled?
So as you can see, it's not possible to actually announce dates of inspections far in advance. We try to lock down the schedule around August 1st each year so that plans can be made for inspection in September or early October.
If you have adult horses to be inspected for breeding, please let us know as early as possible to help us create a schedule and keep the cost of such trips as low as possible.
