USLA Authorized to Issue UELNs for APSL Lusitano Horses Born in the United States
The United States Lusitano Association (USLA) is pleased to announce that it has been granted the authority to issue Universal Equine Life Numbers (UELNs) for APSL-registered Lusitano horses born in the United States.
This designation, approved by the international UELN Project Organization, represents an important step forward in strengthening the identification and registry infrastructure for APSL Lusitanos bred in the United States.
What This Means for APSL Lusitanos
The UELN is the global standard for equine identification. Each horse is assigned a unique number that remains with it for life and is recognized internationally across registries and disciplines.
Beginning in May 2026, USLA will begin issuing official UELNs for APSL Lusitano horses born in the United States at the time of initial registration.
With this authorization, USLA is now able to:
- Assign official UELNs directly to APSL Lusitano horses born in the United States
- Ensure alignment with international identification standards established for the breed
- Strengthen traceability and registry integrity for APSL Lusitanos bred in the United States
All UELNs issued by USLA will follow international standards and will uniquely identify APSL Lusitanos registered through the USLA database. These UELNs will also be recorded within the APSL database, ensuring full alignment and recognition within the official studbook.
Looking Ahead: USLA Passports for APSL Lusitanos
Beginning in January 2027, USLA will introduce passport booklets for APSL Lusitano horses born in the United States at the time of registration.
These passports will:
- Follow the established structure and content used by APSL in Portugal
- Be fully integrated with the UELN system
- Support identification, ownership tracking, and lifecycle documentation for APSL Lusitanos
USLA will work closely with APSL leadership to ensure full alignment with breed and registry standards.
A Milestone for APSL Lusitanos in the United States
This achievement marks a significant advancement in the development of a strong, internationally aligned registry system for APSL Lusitanos bred in the United States.
By establishing the ability to issue UELNs domestically, USLA strengthens its role in supporting breeders, owners, and the long-term integrity of the breed within the United States.
USLA extends its sincere appreciation to APSL and UELN.net for their support in making this possible.
