Need to Have a Horse Inspected for Revision?

Many people in the United States have Lusitano horses that need to be inspected for inscription as breeding stock, a process which is also known as “Revision”.

What is Revision?

APSL, like many other studbooks, requires that any horses that will be used for breeding be inspected, graded, and granted approval for breeding before any offspring of the horse may be registered with the studbook. This process is called “Revision”. Following a successful inspection, the mare or stallion will receive a “Adult” number which allows that horse to be bred and for the offspring of that horse to be registered with APSL. The number may be referred to as either “LGA”, “LA”, or “Breeders Section” number, but all refer to the same thing.

Once the LA number is assigned, it is added to the online studbook so that it may be accessed by anyone who is looking up that horse. In addition, all registered offspring of that horse will also be added to the studbook record and may be accessed online.

What are the requirements to have a mare or stallion inspected?

Stallions:

Registered/inscribed with the APSL with Birth Section number (LN).
Must be 4 years of age or older.
Must be under saddle and able to be ridden at a walk, trot and canter.
Semen Report submitted to USLA.

Mares:

Registered/inscribed with the APSL with Birth Section number (LN).
Must be 3 years of age or older.
Able to be free lunged at a walk, trot and canter.

How do I arrange for my horse to be inspected?

USLA works with breeders to arrange inspection of APSL horses. Here is what you need to do:

Go to the USLA Website and create an account if you have not already done so.
You do not have to be a member of USLA to have a horse inspected, though you will enjoy pricing advantages if you are a member.
Fill out the form “Application for Inspection” on the website.
A representative of USLA will contact you to arrange for the inspection.
You do not need to pay for the inspection until arrangements are finalized.

When should I fill out the form requesting inspection?

Answer: As early as possible (Up to 2 years prior) but at least 6 months before the inspection is needed.

How does USLA organize the inspections?

Organizing inspections is an iterative process that requires that we contact the breeder or owner to ensure the desired outcome.

USLA will organize all of the applications that we receive by region and special requests.
We work to organize events to be as convenient as possible for owners and breeders.
We try to bring as many horses together as is reasonable in a given area in order to reduce costs.
We take into consideration the needs of the owner in order to ensure that as many horses as possible can be inspected.
We work closely with APSL to arrange a schedule that will work for the judge.
Once the schedule are set and approved by APSL and the owners, they will be published.
Individuals with last-minute applications may have the opportunity to join a planned inspection.

Is there a minimum number of horses required to hold an inspection?

Technically, there is not a minimum number of horses required to hold an inspection; however a larger number of horses will reduce the cost per horse.

When will inspections begin?

Update Nov 1, 2021: We successfully held our first US revision September 27- October 9, 2021. Annual revisions in the United States will take place each fall around the same time as the 2021 revision. We will hold our first revision in Canada in May, 2022.
